摘要:Research and technology development in photonic micro devices and structures have experienced a significant growth in recent years, fueled by their broad applications as sensors for in situ, highly sensitive measurement of a wide variety of physical, chemical and biological quantities. The latest advancements in high precision three dimensional (3D) micro/nano fabrication techniques have opened a window of opportunity to develop new integrated photonic sensors delivering unprecedented performance. Consequently, the optical sensor field has quietly gone through a revolutionary transition from the traditional discrete bulk optics to today’s microdevices and microstructures with enhanced functionalities and improved robustness.
This talk summarizes our recent research progresses in the design, fabrication, and characterization of various micromachined optical sensors and devices for biomedical applications. These sensors are made by using an ultrafast laser and/or additive manufacturing to fabricate various microstructures directly in flat substrates and optical fibers. Specific examples include optical interferometers, fiber gratings, integrated whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators, waveplates, polarizers, cantilevers, microfluidics, and fluorescence probes. Applications include ultrasensitive refractive index sensing, biological sample analysis, miniaturized probes for tissue imaging, photoacoustic imaging, microfluidics, single cell characterizations, and sensor-embedded smart parts. While many new sensors and measurement systems are still in the research stage, the challenges will be discussed and the perspectives will be shared on these new platforms.
